When I think back to the moment I knew my partner and I were in it for the long haul, it wasn't a grand gesture or a romantic proposal that sealed the deal. Instead, it was a quiet realization over drinks in a dimly lit bar in Sapporo, Japan, after an epic cycling adventure that pushed us to our limits.
The Journey to Venice-Athens and Beyond
In 2023, Dat and I embarked on a cycling tour from Venice to Athens, a decision that seemed more like a fun challenge than a life-altering event. Little did we know, it would become a defining moment in our relationship.
The ride was brutal. We faced scorching temperatures, grueling distances, and challenging terrain. Yet, Dat's determination and our ability to navigate these obstacles together without conflict made me realize something profound.
The Power of Perseverance
One particular day in Albania stands out. The heat was oppressive, the wind was against us, and our water supplies were running low. Most riders gave up, but Dat and I pressed on. His unwavering commitment to seeing things through, no matter the difficulty, is a strength I admire deeply. It's this quality that made me confident our relationship could withstand any challenge.
A Toast to Our Adventure
In Whisky Bar Tasokare, as we sipped on single malts and reflected on our journey, it hit me: if we could conquer thousands of kilometers on a bike, navigate foreign lands, and remain a united front, marriage seemed like a natural next step. It was a decision made not out of obligation, but out of a shared desire to continue our adventure together.
The Easy Decision
There was no grand proposal, just a mutual understanding that this was the right path. We were both relieved at how effortless the decision felt, and excited to tackle the next chapter of our lives together. The fact that Dat took my surname, to share a name with my son, was a beautiful gesture that solidified our commitment.
A New Chapter
Being married has brought a sense of stability and a deeper connection. We've stepped away from the daily grind at the resort and now live a more relaxed life in Cottesloe with our rescue dog. Cycling remains a passion, and we continue to explore new destinations together. Through it all, we've supported each other, proving that our relationship is built on a foundation of trust and shared experiences.
Looking back, that cycling trip was more than just a physical challenge. It was a test of our resilience and a preview of the life we could build together. And I'm grateful for every kilometer we've ridden, every obstacle we've overcome, and every moment we've shared since.
